2015 Accomplishments

N&R Engineering is proud of the many things we’ve accomplished in 2015. From adding on to our talented staff, to completing projects for our esteemed clients, as well as commemorating our 15th year in business, we have plenty to be grateful for this year.

Completion of the Improved Attachment Design for Ceramic Turbine Blades via Hybrid Concepts

This research project investigated a concept to manufacture hybrid metal-ceramic matrix composite (CMC) turbine blades for use in gas turbine engines which could enable higher operating temperatures and therefore lower operating costs by decreasing fuel consumption.

Additionally, this project was published in NASA’s Tech Briefs Magazine and was presented at the 39th Annual Conference on Composites, Materials, and Structures in Cocoa Beach, Florida.

Expanded our Client Network by Adding The Air Force

Project Title: Uncertainty Quantification of Test Derived Model Parameters for Life Prediction of Composite Bolted Joints in an ICME Framework

This program implements a Bayesian framework for uncertainty quantification of material parameters needed for life prediction of polymer matrix composite (PMC) bolted joints. The proposed software tool will quantify the experimental random and bias errors encountered in fatigue testing of composites, and thereby eliminate the propagation of such errors when quantifying statistical distributions of fatigue strength parameters. Probabilistic Risk Assessment of Air-Borne and Space-Borne Laser Operations

N&R Engineering supported NASA Langley in performing Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) of human eye injury that may be caused by lidar equipment deployed on space-borne platforms and airborne vehicles.

N&R Engineering was the lead in developing the presentation that NASA Langley delivered at the MESCAL meeting held in Paris on September 30, 2015. This presentation included a systematic PRA approach and quantitative estimates of risk of eye injuries for the aided and unaided viewers on Earth. Highly praised by all attendees, this presentation was well received by the international community that works directly in this area.

Completed the Aeroelastic Study and Analysis of Turbomachinery Components

Aeroelasticity is the branch of physics and engineering that studies the interactions between the inertial, elastic, and aerodynamic forces that occur when an elastic body is exposed to a fluid flow. The primary objective of aeroelastic study and analysis of turbomachinery components is to the improve the design of turbine engine rotors, safety, and efficiency.

Completed and Delivered Control Software to NASA Glenn Research Center

This software consists of Distributed Engine Controls of C-MAPSS40k in support of the NASA NPSS program and Functional Fault Modeling in support of the NASA AGSM program.

Distributed Engine Controls:

Due to environmental and structural constraints, control systems in engines typically have a centralized framework: the controller (FADEC) is attached to the engine through a casing that protects it from the high temperatures produced during operation and is connected to each sensor or actuator through a series of wires. Functional Fault Modeling:

Function Fault Models are directed graph representations of failure effect propagation paths. They can be used to diagnose a failure mode based on sensor measurements, analysis of sensor coverage of a system, isolation of specific failure signatures and failure mode ambiguity.
